I think it just depends on whether or not you need a car and to be able to drive to carry out the requirements of the job description. I do not drive, and was able to prove at interview I would be able to carry out my work as well as any other employee doing my role using public transport. I have now been doing my job for 4 years and have never needed to use a car to do my job, but when the company advertises, they say that having a car is a requirement. I was gobby enough to convince them otherwise. If you are unable to drive because of a physical or mental disability them the employer should put things in place to ensure you are able to fulfil your job description in other ways, if this is the case and you were not employed for the reason of not having a car, then this would certainly be discriminatory practice.

I thought the prospective employer could only ask if you had means to get to work, not if you own a car.

i don't think so. it would probably be thought of as a necessary qualification for candidates, like a college degree, or like a certain number of years of experience in a certain job or field.

no he may pay a car allowance or you have to use your own and take the mileage deductions on your taxes
