I've been offered this vacancy at the Magistrate Court. What do you think my chances are of progressing onto different roles within the Ministry of Justice?
They did say in my interview that they offer a training academy. I'm always under the impression that a receptionist is looked upon as being purely a receptionist, and has limited chance of progression, yet I'm determined that I want a more challenging, proffesional role in the future.

Well, I work in the States as a paralegal. I don't know much about the hiring practices of the UK, but I can tell you that if they are willing to train you for a specific job, you will have very little movement. Unless you are willing to get additional education and qualifications, you will be limited. There may be positions for "lead" receptionist or a "training" receptionist, but I think you'll be bound to just the receptionist role.

If you want to progress more, you may want to look into other legal professions there in the UK that do have upward movement. Even in my profession, there is little upward movement. You just work for bigger firms and eventually manage paralegals.

If anything, this will give you experience in the legal realm, so it isn't a bad thing, but I think your gut instinct is right. Again, this is from my experience in the US legal field.

The best thing to do is take the job and find out yourself. After working there, you can talk to other receptionist/administrators on how the "system works" since they will know based on how long they have been there and what to expect. It could be no different than be hired and promised that you will have all kinds of opportunities to advance and later after working there for 2 years or more, find that they did not hold up their promise, give excuses etc of why no advancement.

I am guessing that while in your interview, you made it known that you want greater opportunities in the future and that maybe the reason for the offer, since they want someone who wants to stay there and look for advancement and not become "settled" in your job and not care.

And yes, sometimes there is an attitude that a receptionist is just that and not anymore more. But if you ask for more work or training, then might be thought as someone who has potential and an asset to move on. Here is something else that I found out personally in the US is that many para-legals are considered "glorified secretaries" in most law firms. When I got my para-legal degree back in 1994 and interviewed in many law firms, realized that it was a title only and was doing only secretarial work and paid accordingly which was not much. Today it may have changed, but the last time I interviewed for one was 3 years ago and still only wanted to pay $25K, which was much lower than I was ever paid as a claim adjuster.

Take it and if it does not pan out, you will now have experience and may find something better.

good luck
