No it is not illegal for an employer to make it mandarory to work 10 hours a day. For any hours over 40 worked you must be paid time and 1/2. You do not say what state you are in which could change this answer slightly as this is based on federal regulations.

Normally there are no restrictions as to the number of hours an employee works (except factory workers and a couple of other fields.) But anything over 40 hours a week must be compensated with overtime pay and NOT compensation time.

If you work four 10-hour days, you're still working 40 hours per week. Otherwise, they would have to pay overtime or, if you're exempt, everyone would be doing it. In some places, management works 60 hour weeks or more.
